Last night Pop Opera nightclub hosted the Jason Matlo Spring/Summer 2009 show as part of BC Fashion Week in Vancouver. Models strutted down a red carpet runway which sliced through the dance floor, then snaked their way through the VIP section to pose for the media and Matlo’s couture clients. The room was packed and energetic music maintained the buzz throughout the show.
Presented in three parts, the collection kicked off with Matlo’s “Jet Set Barbie” resort wear. My eyes were drawn to the silky print fabric infused with yellows, blacks and Chinatown reds, which Matlo incorporated into numerous resort pieces – including this sexy gown which flowed beautifully:
Drag diva Trixie Treat made an appearance to mark the first interlude, teasing the crowd and warning that we had to clap more in order to see more. She glided and leapt through the room with high energy, singing and dancing to Madonna’s “Vogue.” So very appropriate:
“Metals” was next and this portion of the show was filled with, you guessed it, metallic fabrics. I was particularly fond of the Pollock-inspired detailing adorning the lower portion of a couple of the dresses, and these tiered ruffles:
Finally, after another whopping rendition by Trixie Treat, we saw evening wear within the “Black is Basic” portion of the show. Matlo consistently includes an array of black pieces within his collections despite the season, and his jersey dresses impressed. I especially liked this gown, which looks red-carpet ready (don’t be surprised if you see it on a celeb in the near future – a Matlo dress earned actress Gabrielle Miller a “best dressed” title at an awards show last year):
There were a number of pieces within Matlo’s Spring/Summer ‘09 collection that were surpisingly ready-to-wear. The designer has a penchant for crafting dresses and gowns, but the collection presented yesterday was quite varied. Here are a few additional looks I caught myself ogling:
I loved that bolero.
My obsession with collared shirts continues, clearly.
