Three finalists took part in a composite show during BC Fashion Week in a bid to become the GenerationNext Designer for Spring/Summer 2009. The winner received a prize package tailored to promote their new company: a sponsored fashion show during the next season of BCFW, financial and marketing plans, public relations services, an editorial in a leading industry magazine, a free booth at the Portobello West markets, and more.
Finalists Margarita Angelatos for Red Jade, Michelle Lee and Garry Favell for Joseph and Elizabeth and Two of Hearts by Jenny Yen and Tabitha Savoie presented their 10-piece collections to the best turnout Generation Next has had since its inception 3 seasons ago – there wasn’t a spare seat in the house.
First up was Two of Hearts, with lots of colourful organic jersey pieces. It was very tween styles – I wasn’t a fan but I did enjoy the shirt dresses:
Next up was a white, black and cream collection by Joseph and Elizabeth, and I was much more impressed with this collection – they definitely have some garment construction skills. A few pieces that I would wear, such as this suit (minus the cargo skirt):
And finally, Red Jade. I found her pieces to be quite boxy, which was magnified by th abundant use of tuck pleats. I liked this dress with the punches of red, but that was about it:
I predicted that J&E would take the prize, but Red Jade was victorious. Congratulations and best of luck with your career!
