I found this ‘easy’ pattern on the DIY site for baby booties and decided to go for it after successfully completing my monster scarf (pics/deets coming soon). I strayed from the pattern and used larger needles and thicker yarn, so they turned out to be more like young child booties, not for baby. But it was a good second project to tackle nonetheless…
I first ran into problems with the “yf” instruction. When checking my rows, I was constantly off with too few stitches. Turns out I was counting each yarn forward as a knit stitch and this was incorrect. Then came the instep shaping, where after my first attempt the toe of the bootie was protruding out to the side and not the front – I didn’t know where I went wrong but this was clearly bad.
Had to rip the whole instep out and try again, this time without putting down the project halfway through. Taking a break the first time around is what got me all mixed up and backwards and knitting a deformed bootie toe!
I finished one bootie a day once I figured out what I was doing – knit all in once piece and sewed up the sole and back seams, it was a pretty easy project and a good way to tackle a more challenging project.
I used Bernat yarn (Solo color 57236 for the body, Illusions 00610 for the trim) with 5.5mm needles on the sole and 7mm needles for the rest.
These are going to my little friend Asha in Victoria – I hope she likes them!
