Crazy Heart

This film is amazing. Jeff Bridges, need I say more.  Got me on an old country kick, listening to outlaw country records and dreaming of rickety barns, horses, rocky mountains and open fields, camping lakeside, drinking whiskey by the fire, playing cards, being dusty.  And cowboys, there’s just something about cowboys.

Right now I’m hyper alert to things that are inspiring me, pouring everything into designing my next larry. collection.  The nostalgia for old country you get from this film is a big drive for me in this process.  Just makes me want to pile into an old Dodge and retreat to the Cariboo, hole up with my dog and a set of knitting needles and get to work.

I’d fully recommend getting your hands on the Crazy Heart soundtrack for starters, there’s some great tunes on there.  I’m going to hit up the thrift stores and look for some old honky tonk records to add to my small but growing collection.

Music Videos With Cars

Two pretty awesome new music videos I’ve seen in the last day that are worthy of sharing.

Gorillaz
‘Stylo’

Starring Bruce Willis = how could you go wrong really.

And, OK Go ‘This Too Shall Pass’

I don’t even want to think about how many times it would have taken to get that right. Impressive.

Where the Sun Reposes

I picked up this book of poetry by a Vancouver writer, Senka Kovacevic, and can’t shake this poem from my head:

Where the Sun Reposes

When you are far
Oh when you are far
You guide my attention like a star
You are at the place where the sun reposes
All bathed in gold and clouds tinted of roses

But if I crossed this ocean
I’d shake off this potion
And again in the distance see my beautiful devotion

Again this Midas glow is out of reach
A happy movie with muted speech

Again I reach the horizon and the sun has moved
And that distance is flattering is all that I’ve proved

It’s rare for me to pick up a book of poetry and actually buy it.  I seldom even get too into reading poems – often they’re so convoluted and twisted in disguise that it’s a chore to read.  I like these poems because I know exactly what the author is talking about in how it relates to my own experience, but she doesn’t sacrifice her power of articulation by establishing an obvious connection with her reader.

Wishing Well is another stand out:

You are my wishing well
My most precious coins you have swallowed
Those hopes have sunk to the littered floor
My pockets are hollowed

When your currency is faith and trust
Your pocket is inside your chest
And when it’s empty, your eyes with tears are filled
Which spill into the well and increase the depth

And now there is a greater distance
To dive to reach those abandoned wishes
I only hope that I can hold my breath
Long enough to save those future kisses

Tulip Press, find it!

Downtown Vancouver ArtWalk 2010

This is quite likely one of the most exciting things that will be happening in Vancouver during the Olympics – at least for locals. The Downtown Vancouver ArtWalk will see 10 vacant spaces in the Gastown district converted into temporary “pop-up” galleries, with dozens of additional pre-existing locations included on a 3-day art tour spanning from the Downtown Eastside through Chinatown and into Gastown.

Here’s a sneak peek at some of the spaces being converted into pop-up galleries:

Vancouverites will recognize that this block of buildings in Gastown has been under renovation/reconstruction for years – and the doors are finally being opened.  It’s pretty magical – after so many years of construction, you begin to feel that it’s simply perpetual and will never end.  The ArtWalk is a christening of sorts for these spaces, that have been unused for so long.

A diverse range of Vancouver’s top visual artists are installing works into the spaces over the coming week for the official launch on February 12: Raif Adelberg, Ronan Boyle, Bienvenido Cruz, Andy Dixon, The Dark, Kris Krug, Malcolm Levy, Christian Nicolay, Jeff Petry, Office Supplies Inc., and Indigo Daydreamer are just a few examples of the talent you’ll find.  And of course, you can find LARRY. in the Obakki store at 44 Water st throughout the ArtWalk and the Olympics.

On Andy Dixon, don’t miss his opening at the grace-gallery tomorrow night (February 5) for his new collection, Such Events Have Led Us Here.

Here is Andy’s preview:

“This is a story.

INCIDENT TWO:
A dog named Jorge braves the traffic of a Santiago highway to pull a wounded dog to safety.

INCIDENT THREE:
Lulu, a pot-bellied pig, saves her owner’s life by throwing herself into highway traffic in order to draw attention to the fact that her owner is having a heart attack.

INCIDENT ONE:
I am born.

INCIDENT FIVE:
You read this.

INCIDENT FOUR:
I write down INCIDENTS TWO and THREE, but feel as though the story is incomplete without also mentioning INCIDENTS ONE, FOUR, and FIVE.

The End.”

Vampyre Weekend at the VIFC

True Bloodgrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Vampires: a current obsession in film, TV and other storytelling mediums that needs no introduction, whose popularity has risen and fallen in waves since the inception of the commonly identified vampire in the 18th century.  True Blood, Twilight, The Vampire Diaries – no matter what the storyline (or how bad the acting), the allure of the vampire has overtaken just about everyone, even those who have tried to resist the fad.

The Vancouver International Film Centre has planned a fun-filled Halloween weekend that will cater to your obsession, screening 11 vampire-related films between Oct 30-Nov 1.  Selected titles range from black and white classics from the 1920’s and 30’s such as London After Midnight and Mark of the Vampire, to more modern favourites such as Let the Right One In.  If you fancy a side of humour in your vampire stories, don’t miss Vampire’s Kiss with Nicolas Cage.

They’ve got the best lineup on Halloween night:

Let the Right One In

Let the Right One In at 4:30 pm, a film which I would love to see again on the big screen..

Habit

Habit at 8:15 pm, shot on 35mm and taking place in NYC on Halloween night, this one looks intriguing and adopting more of a modern take on the vampire rather than a literal interpretation with fangs and the whole bit.

Rabid

Rabid at 10:20 pm, directed by David Cronenberg and taking place in Montreal.  You gotta love a good Canadian vampire flick, especially when your blood-thirsty protagonist is a woman.

Vampyr

Vampyr at midnight, this is one of the b&w goodies from 1932 and has just been digitally remastered.  VIFC calls it “one of the strangest and most beguiling films in the entire horror canon,” so you can count on it scaring the jeepers right out of you.

Check out the full list of films and showtimes for Vampyre Weekend at the Film Centre here.

I’ll leave you with one last bit of vampire sexiness to tide you over until next weekend, from Queen of the Damned (don’t judge me):
