W2 Letterpress Printmaking

drawers full of letter blocks to choose from at W2

Last week, I enjoyed two days of printmaking with the heritage flatbed letterpress at W2 with Shallom Johnson, who schooled me on how to play with word/font/size arrangements.  I had some scribbles and poetry that I wrote during my design process for larry. this year, and I wanted to include some prints with the lobird road collection opening at grace-gallery.

inking the letters

Choosing your letter size and font is a daunting task – it’s very difficult to decide where to begin.  My only advice is to just start somewhere…begin to lay it out, and do test prints until you find an arrangement you like.  All of the letters need to be magnet-locked onto the metal flatbed, and doing this without shifting the letters out of place can be challenging.

I will most certainly be frequenting the letterpress as often as I can – a great idea for making personal cards, and I may even print off a run of hang tags for the larry. collection this year.  The process is both creatively challenging and calming.  The letterpress studio is volunteer-led and artist-run, and will most likely be accessible to the public via a sliding scale fee in order to keep it accessible to the community. If you’re interested in learning more about using the letterpress, I highly recommend trying out one of the workshops – check their Facebook page for upcoming events.

larry. designs: lobird road collection presentation

Been working hard on putting this show together, and I’m so very excited for this Saturday.  My current larry. designs collection will be presented, a capsule collection of jewelry pieces that I have been working on with Zula Designs will be on display, and Bienvenido Cruz (who shot our lookbook and did our promotional videos) will be putting up some photo and video works.  Previous season pieces will also be available for sale so come check that out too.

Win a Larry to Keep You Warm

chinook winds shawl by larry designs

dace is running yet another of their fantastic giveaway contests, and this time around you can win a free larry. shawl.  Simply comment on dace’s contest page as to what keeps you warm and you’ll be entered to win the Chinook Winds shawl, hand knit by moi.

While you’re on the dace site, be sure to cruise through their new Fall collection – it’s amazing, thus I’ve already taken the opportunity to write about it here on The Conveyor Belt. Pair your new larry. shawl with dace’s Penny Dress for an easy Fall transition look, or layer it over the cropped Dana Blouse with the Walter Jacket and you’ll be set for the entire winter season.

Bravern’s FNO Winner

Congrats to Alyssa Taylor of Seattle, WA, who was just off to New York City September 9-12th during the Official Fashion’s Night Out, where they stayed at the Fashion 26 Hotel. If I hadn’t been traipsing around Europe until yesterday, I would have been much more jealous!

Larry 2010 Presale + Conveyor Rummage Sale

One big mondo event as we lead up to the Fall: we’re extending an open invite to friends/family/the internets to come by the grace-gallery on August 14 to see the new larry. pieces in person, try them on, and place your orders for Fall at a 20% off retail discount!  Past season pieces will be available for sale at 40% off retail.

I’ll also be hawking massive amounts of clothes, shoes, bags, accessories at garage-sale prices on the other side of the gallery.  So many of my favourite pieces that I literally do not have room for in my closet anymore, so they have to go to new homes.  Mostly womenswear (obviously) – shoes sized 8-9, clothing in the small range.

We’ll have snacks and a bar, of course.  It’s how we do.

Vancouver Olympics Lost and Found Sale

Vancouver Olympics: the Lost & Found Sale

Now this is a sale worth blogging about: imagine the treasure trove of lost goods left over from the manic weeks of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics.  It’s great to see that the proceeds will be going to a worthy cause – the Network of Inner City Community Services Society, so families and children in the Strathcona, Downtown East Side, and Grandview Woodlands will receive additional support.

The sale began today and will continue to Saturday, July 31.  I will definitely be checking this out tomorrow – probably a good opportunity to stock up on an extra cell phone (I seem to lose my Blackberry every 3 months), a camera, and who knows what else they’ll have – but it sounds like the selection will be all across the board, even in terms of clothing.

875 E Hastings, just West of Campbell St. 11am-6pm. Cash only.
