Portobello West: Season Opener

morena.jpg

It’s been two long months since the last Portobello West fashion and art market, and this weekend marks the 2-day season opener. The Rocky Mountaineer Station is open 12pm-6pm this Saturday and Sunday [March 29/30], where you’ll find all your favourite local designers plus a few new kids on the block. Keep your eyes peeled for Morena and Carny Love, both contenders at BC Fashion Week’s Generation Next competition, and larry. will be sharing a booth with Dominic Design so be sure to stop by and say hello!

Colour me Pink

color.jpg

Spring is the season of growth and new beginnings, and in celebration of winter’s retreat you should consider injecting a bit of colour into your wardrobe.  Keep your blacks, greys and browns as your ultimate basic building blocks, but this spring incorporate punches of powerful color such as orange, crimson or pink in subtle ways to break up the drab and depressed darks of your winter palette.

Beneath a cardigan opt for a slightly loose fitting yellow ochre or salmon pink tee; pair a vibrant orange plaid scarf with a casual charcoal suit; or don burnt crimson loafers with your favourite denim.  The intensity of the hue is entirely up to you.  If you’re put off by this whole notion of color in your otherwise black wardrobe, try throwing some browned down hues that are dark and earthy as a start – we call this the path of least resistance, as these shady colors will calmly dissolve among your blacks.  Pastel colors or sheer fabrics are likewise easy interlopers across a landscape of white and beige garments, for their similar lack of contrast.  But it certainly takes a confident (read: sexy) man to go all the way with that hint of color by choosing the most vibrant and energetic colors available.  Just remember that when you take colour to these extremes, repeat the “less is more” mantra to avoid looking too flamboyant – unless, of course, that’s exactly what you’re after.

BELLE Fashion Show

belle.jpg

Stylists in Vancouver know that there are gems to be found in The Bay, and I’ve been advised time and time again to check often because the amazing lines get bought up in a nanosecond.  Well now the secret is out, and on Thursday March 27 Tasha E Fashion Productions is putting on a fashion event to showcase just how current The Bay can be.

Head up to the 3rd floor tomorrow at 5:15 for a ballroom dancing lessson, and stick around for the Spring Fashion Show & Trend Report hosted by eTalk’s Susie Wall at 6:30.  You’ll also have the opportunity to treat yourself to a mini-makeover, douse yourself in pretty scents at the fragrance bar, and enjoy 15% off women’s fashions.  I find that The Bay prices are super reasonable to begin with, so an extra 15% off is a great bonus.   There will also be cocktails and hors d’oeuvres from the Al Fresco Cafe.

RSVP to 604.681.6211 and if you’re one of the first 200 to do so,  you’ll receive a special gift.  If you don’t make the first 200, rest assured as there are more door prizes to be won.

Check out the BELLE Magazine online here.

Found Art

found.jpg

I found this big, antiquated photo in my building’s free room and I’ve been looking for more art to put up on our walls so I snatched it up. It reminds me of something you would see in an old ramshackle pub, tattered but rife with character. It was good to go after I washed the glass, and looks great in our guest bathroom next to an antique wood dresser. Nothing beats free!
