Obakki Spring/Summer & Fall/Winter 08 Fashion Show

Last night an invite-only crowd gathered at the Obakki retail location for a fashion show featuring designs from the current collection, in addition to a sneak peek of what’s coming up for Fall/Winter 2008. Salt Tasting Room also provided delicious wines and snacks, and the swag bags contained a couple of magazines, a scented soy candle, and if you were lucky an Obakki scarf!

Here are my favourites from the current Spring/Summer collection, in store now:

And Fall/Winter is looking promising:

And finally, my Obakki outfit for this F/W…I’ve dubbed those pants “the Morrisons” because, like Jim Morrison’s leathers, I will be so obsessed with them that I won’t even take them off to bathe. The jacket was also amazing…Love the casual rocker chic look:

See the rest of the photos from the evening here, enjoy! All photos by Kris Krug of Static Photography.

And remember, the Obakki online store sale ends tomorrow [May 31] so get your promo code and enjoy the discount while you can!

Where in the world is Agathe of Style Bytes?

Style Bytes was one of the few fashion & style blogs that I checked on a daily basis, but over the last month the site has been shrouded in mystery, and become a subject of much confusion. Popular Norwegian fashion blogger Agathe’s last post warned readers that she was taking a weekend trip to Stockholm with girlfriends and wouldn’t be posting, as she was staying at a questionable hostel and didn’t want to bring her laptop. Since then (nearly a month has passed), there have been no posts.

Searching on google has led me to a bunch of fashion blogs all wondering the same thing: where in the world is Agathe? The outpouring of worry is both heartwarming and astonishing – daily readers, like myself, googling her name and discovering that far from being psycho stalkers, their curiosity is matched. So out of character for a daily blogger to simply vanish – especially given Agathe’s recent success with profiles in numerous fashion magazines. It would seem that Agathe’s husband’s blog, Trashion, also recently went offline.

If something horrendous had happened, Norwegian newspapers certainly would have picked up on it. Further investigation reveals that Agathe accepted a Facebook friend request (by Jennine of The COVETED) on May 17, so she’s certainly alive and well. As Jennine notes on her site, the simplest and most rational explanation should be accepted as the reason for Agathe’s disappearance: after 3 long years of blogging almost daily, perhaps she was just sick of it?

Except a new piece of the puzzle has now been introduced: the entire site has now been taken down, with only a forbidden error message in it’s place…and again, people are asking why? The mystery continues!

The Revel Room Restaurant in Gastown

Apparently I’ve been living under a rock, because the Revel Room has been open for about a month just down the road in Gastown and I hadn’t even heard of it until yesterday. Shame on me.

Discussed some big ideas with friends over share plates – the naan bread with roasted garlic, gorgonzola and tomato relish was delicious, as was the daily soup (a coconut/curry vegetable concoction), grilled asparagus and the Chinatown fried rice. My only concessions were that the menu is very meaty and I’m veggie (although the kitchen was very accommodating and put all of the meat in side dishes for us), and the Caesar salad dressing tasted a bit too much like mayo. Next time I will try the fennel + tomato gratin, grilled polenta, and seared albacore tuna. Yum.

The restaurant spans across two floors and was entirely renovated before opening, resulting in an interior marked by warm decor and ambient lighting. And here is the tip you really need to know: though Gastown is an “up and coming” neighbourhood, the lounges (ie. Chill Winston, Six Acres, etc) in the area haven’t quite caught up and liquor licenses generally shut things down by 1am. The Revel Room, however, has their license until 2am. Game on for late(r) night drinking!

Vancouver Sample Sales: Twice Shy, BYOB, Soia & Kyo, Jacqueline Conoir, Matt & Nat, and more!

OK there are 3 big sample sales happening this week/end in Vancouver that you need to know about…

This one is a goodie, because it’s all about sustainable fashion. Find organic clothing by Twice Shy, or items for the kiddies from their sister line, Fig. Bring Your Own Bag will also be in the house, so you can take all your purchases home in one of their handy reusable totes!

Jacqueline Conoir is cleaning house sale and with samples at 50% off retail. JC Studio is a huge production house so there should be lots of items from seasons both past and present. Sale runs Thursday May 29/Friday May 30 from 11am-6pm, and Saturday May 31 from 10am-4pm at 46 W. 6th Ave in Vancouver. No flyer for this sale, but feast your eyes on this crisp white suit:

The Dakota Group is unloading stock beginning today. I’d be on the lookout for great deals on Soia & Kyo jackets – I am a big fan of buying out of season, it’s just delicious how much money you can save. Also look for Matt & Nat handbags and wallets. Two great Eastern Canadian brands, plus lots more!

Happy shopping.

Tend Skin: Banned in Canada? We’re Using it Anyway!

To kick off our Summer Beauty Series here on The Conveyor Belt, I thought it best to get right down to the nitty gritty – or bumpy gritty, if you will. The razors, depilatories, waxes, electrolysis needles and tweezers are out in full seasonal swing, but if you suffer from perpetual ingrown hairs, razor burn, or redness (the evil trifecta in the skin care industry) you can confidently bare all because Tend Skin works to eliminate those issues.

This product might be illegal in Canada (no accurate answer on whether this is actually still the case or not, as there are Canadian distributors), but it works like magic. Literally, magic – even the creators don’t know how or why it works.

Now, I’ve known about Tend Skin for years but I am amazed at how many people don’t know about it or similar products and just suffer through their unsightly miseries. They’ll try everything that doesn’t work – like lavender or tea tree mixed with grapeseed oil – but if you want results, you have to go black market with the banned chemical products.

And the reason for the ban? Tend Skin contains Acetylsalicylate, an Aspirin derivative which is a controlled substance in Canada. Which means, don’t squirt it in your eye, eat it, or leave it lying around for children to play with, but do use it topically to treat any of the following: razor burn, razor bumps, ingrown hairs, foot/underarm odor, necktie redness, and – wait for it – ink removal!

For a home brew recipe (I can’t testify to how well it works) head here, or email us for info on where to buy in Vancouver.

VIDFEST is Best!

Civixen photo.

The PopVox Awards and closing gala for VIDFEST was great, and the impromptu party that happened a couple warehouses down the way was more fun than any one person should be able to handle. The Mondo Spider was in attendance, and a number of meetings were called on the mobile boardroom (photos: daytime / partytime) as we did laps around the warehouse, it was very productive.

The parties were fun, but this is why VIDFEST is best: you could practically reach into thin air and pluck an idea out of nowhere, the energy was just electrifying. Everyone around you is doing something amazing, fired up about whatever it is they’re working on, and it was really inspiring to meet so many supercoolios in one short week. The other thing I appreciated was, unlike film industry events, nobody was too good to attend (an old boss used to say of film networking parties, “They all want to talk to me, but I don’t need to talk to them..”) The scope of panelists, attendees, and everyone involved spanned from folks like me to CEOs and master planners, and we had no trouble getting along.

Me in the red, eyeing a reporter asking Chris Anderson an irrelevant question.

In addition to Chris Anderson’s talk, I was also able to attend the McLuhan 2.0 session and the Right Brain Rock Out session on creativity with Evan Biddell, Jonathan Tippett, Jan Sircus, and Graham Clark. You can read about McLuhan 2.0 here, and continue on for highlights from Right Brain.
