Babs is having their summer sale coming up – this is a great store, and with their rare 2-26 size range they can deliver on their “real sizes for real women” promise. And I do like wine with my shopping!
BOOOOOOOM! runs participatory projects every so often, and the newest one is up and ready for your submission. The task: draw a picture of yourself with your eyes closed.
I read this, was reminded of doing similar projects in high school art class, and swiftly set to drawing a picture of myself without looking at the paper while doing so. Jeff sent me back a confused email, explaining that I was supposed to draw (with eyes open) a portrait of myself with closed eyes. Two minutes later he writes again, happily noting that he realized what I had done and that it added a nifty new dimension to the project.
Here is a fine example of a talented artist and her interpretation of the project:
And my attempt, a 30 second blind drawing with a highlighter:
Now, you’ve seen what can be done – if you can’t draw (ahem, please see above), just have fun with it! Close your eyes and allow yourself to sketch a ridiculous drawing of yourself. If you can draw, make sure those eyes are closed in the image. I can’t wait to see the rest of the entries once the project is over! Two entrants will win 500 free business cards from Uprinting.com, so there’s some extra incentive. Now get cracking.
More great finds in Steveston thrift stores. This was a power trip – I managed to hit up 2 stores within 30 minutes, and acquired a lamp, clutch, scarf, red silky tunic. and patterned dress for $12 total. Tunic and dress not shown; I have to take in the dress a bit beneath the armpits.
It took every ounce of energy in my being to not squeal with delight when I found this clutch. Even better, the $3 price tag. The scarf is a memento piece, decorated with landmarks in London, England. Super silky soft.
This was another amazing find. The shade is the same texture/material as an old red lamp I have which belonged to my grandmother. The two of them on either side of my couch nicely compliment the big painting by The Woodpile Collective which adorns on the wall between. A super steal at $3 – functional lightbulb included. FYI, that’s my knitting needle garden next to it.
Overheard at Boneta on Saturday night, from a woman referring to her gin martini.
Got me thinking about seductive classic cocktails, and how this needs to come back into fashion. Gone are my desires for sweet, sugary, or otherwise complicated drinks – so I’ve compiled a list of my top 5 adult beverages for your indulgence.
Sidecar: 1 part cognac, 1 part orange liqueur (Cointreau, Grand Marnier or Triple Sec), 1 part lemon juice. Shake over ice, serve in chilled glass with a sugared rim. Or, hold the lemon juice and have a Beautiful instead, served in a warm snifter – a potent cure for a mild cold.
Scotch whiskey, single malt: Some of my favourites include Glenfiddich, Glemorangie, and Bowmore. Anything too peaty reminds me of motor oil; don’t quite have the palate for such an intense flavour. Serve over two fingers of ice.
Classic martini: I prefer a burnt gin martini with a twist, but any variation will do. I’ve been told I make a mean burnt gin martini. Like, rusty nail in an open wound kind of mean.
Rusty Nail: 2 parts scotch whiskey, 1 part Drambuie, served over ice and garnished with a lemon.
Dubonnet: The perfect after dinner/late night drink. Served over ice with a squeeze of lemon.
We recently had the best bike experience ever at Reckless Bikes. Stopped in for some free air (if you had windows, they’d wash those for you too), and got to discussing all the improvements we could make on our rides (Carleen: whitewall tires, new wheels, a good lube, possibly a paint job; Terri: new brakes, tires) with the extremely helpful gentlemen who work there.
Here’s how our fun-filled hour went down…
“Manager Guy” Ryan: Carleen, if you’re looking to really pimp out your ride, I’d recommend dating one of us and getting it done for free. We could really make this bike into a beauty for you.
Jeff Hamada over at BOOOOOOOM! recently blogged about this fantastic project launched by Randomly Run4istRun, a great arts/inspiration/design blog, and I had to share as well. Jude is building on the amazing collaborative and inspirational opportunities that arise through blogging by mailing out 10 notebooks to interested parties. Personal thoughts and inclinations, which we often reveal online (albeit superficially), will be shared the old fashioned way – written by hand and delivered via snail mail.
Participants are free to contribute anything – poetry, stories, images, collage, deep dark fears, secrets, whatever. If you’re not inspired, flipping through all the previous entries should get your creative juices flowing. When you’ve completed your mission, mail the notebook to the next person on the list and on it goes. For the sake of curious internets, entries will also be scanned and posted online.
This wonderful traveling diary will soon be heading my way (I signed up immediately) and I am anxiously anticipating its delivery.
We all deserve to receive some good mail once in a while. Head to the Do Not Leave Unattended page to read more details, and you too can gleefully check your mailbox every day until the notebook arrives.
