Victoria is chock full of great independent boutiques and Yates Street is home to a brand-new shopping destination: The Butchers Hook. The small, minimalist shop opened on October 21 and stocks great menswear and womenswear labels including Vancouver’s own (212), pieces by ex-Obakki designer Genevieve Graham, hand-knit scarves by the Canadian Sweater Co., my larry. neckwarmers, LnA, Wrath Arcane, and EVENAGAMBA. Dave Wallace, also an Obakki design alumni, owns the shop with model/girlfriend Lauren and plans to offer his own upcoming collection in the store in the near future.

Their goal is to carry only local labels by this upcoming Spring – preferably local to Victoria, but at the very least Dave wants all lines to be BC-designed. So a note to all you fashion designers looking for retailers for your SS09 pieces, get in touch with Dave or Lauren and show them your stuff!
The Butchers Hook is at 535 Yates St. in Victoria, BC. Call at 250.384.0327.

I never used to have any skill when it came to thrift shopping. Eternally in a rush, I struggled to find the patience to sort through the racks, consider the potential of each item, and torture myself in the fitting room trying to force the pieces to look good when they simply didn’t. I ended up with a closet full of clothes that I never wore – hence my love for clothing swaps. Then suddenly I became a master second hand shopper, consistently scoring unique and well fitting pieces for dirt cheap. I finally developed a successful system, and here it is:

I received a fresh (almost) notebook in the mail a little while ago for the Do Not Leave Unattended project, and it’s about to leave me tomorrow on the way to Jeff Hamada. I’m even dropping it off by hand for him, how’s that?

Anyway, here are some photos of the book…

Last Thursday Obakki hosted their invite-only, bi-annual fashion show for Vancouver’s top fashion insiders, stylists, designers, photographers, writers, models…you get the idea. The show was held at Obakki’s retail location in Gastown, with chairs spanning the length of the space – which just this year won an award for the beautiful architectural design. The Vancouver designed and manufactured label is making major grounds in North American retail markets, so it will be exciting to see how this homegrown talent dominates in coming seasons as the design team continues to hit target after target.

There were so many pieces I liked, so you’ll have to click through for all the photos!

The Comme des Garcons collection hits Vancouver’s flagship H&M location tomorrow, November 13 and you may want to be camping outside of the H&M location like so many other die-hards have in other locations around the world.
Thousands piled into the new Harajuku location in Tokyo over the weekend and snatched up all of the goodies Rei Kawakubo designed for the Swedish retail giant. Shoppers lined up days prior, in freezing weather and rain. That surpasses dedication – that’s crazy business.
Be forewarned, there is a 2-item limit per style…you can still purchase the entire collection, you just can’t take 12 sizes and colours of each piece. H&M is on to you, eBay sellers…
Pacific Centre doors open at 10 am…I think I’ll take a brisk walk there in the AM when I arrive at work, which is conveniently located right around the corner, and investigate whether or not there is a line-up.
Will crazy shoppers brave the rain and cold for an opportunity to buy some cheap-ish Comme des Garcons for H&M garb?
