Project Runway Canada Season 2 Episode 1 Recap

The first episode of Project Runway Canada Season 2, “Fashion is a Battlefield,” aired last night to reality-starved audiences across the country.  We had a swell time watching at the grace-gallery, which was packed with friends and fans of Genevieve Graham and Kim Cathers, who were both in attendance.  Christie Clayton also dropped by earlier on in the evening to say hello.

It was at times hard to follow what was going on in the show because there were so many people hooting and hollering with excitement, but here’s basically how it went down.  Fourteen designers arrive at a mansion in Ottawa, Ontario, and we get some brief introductions to Camille, Jessica, Brandon, Margarita, Christie, Jason, Baylor, Sunny, Adejoke, Jaclyn, Kim, Genevieve and Danio.  We learn that Jaclyn is very competitive, and Danio battled cancer for 7 years before developing skin ulcers on his legs.

Kim pops the champagne after everyone meets and we learn from interview vignettes that she reworks vintage clothing and likes to push people’s buttons.  She confidently vows that she’s going to win this competition.  “Obviously.”  Christie wants to prove to the show and to Canada that she’s an awesome designer. Everyone cheers their champagne and Kim declares, “You’re all gonna die!”

Project Runway Canada: Q&A with Christie Clayton

Q&A With Project Runway Canada Contestant Christie Clayton:

TP: How did you prepare for the premiere of Project Runway Canada tonight?

CC: I’ve been working on Carny Love all day, and just staying calm.  I might get some new shoes.

TP: What are you feeling nervous or anxious about, anything?

CC: I am not feeling too nervous right now, but I tend to be in denial like this.  When the show starts tonight I will most likely spaz, so I have decided to watch it with a small group of peeps.

TP: And most looking forward to?

CC: Looking forward to seeing all the hits on the brand new Carny Love website, which was just re-launched, and reliving all the fun I had with the awesome, talented designers I got to know.

TP: What’s your plan for the big night tonight?

CC: I will do a little tour around town to a few parties pre-show, then watch it privately with my friends, and I’ll probably swing by a few parties afterwards as well.

São Paulo Fashion Week Comes to a Close

The Fall 2009 collections by 37 design houses were presented in São Paolo this week, calling attention to Brazil’s 50 million dollar fashion industry and the vibrant “Brazilianness” inherent in their native designs.  While the more established fashion weeks have seen gloomy blacks and greys strutting down the runway toward a recession-led winter, in São Paolo the palette was noticeably brighter and emblematic of the richness of Latin American culture.

Many hewed to the blacks and grays favored by European and US stylists so admired by Brazil’s moneyed elite — colors and which are likely to serve as a statement on the world economy for some time to come.

But, true to theme, they also revealed creations full of color, capturing the optimistic spirit of a country that has raised its global profile amid economic progress.

In a way, the balance between dark and light, hue and shadow, spoke to Brazil’s ambitions to leverage its emerging market clout, resourcefulness and imagination to take its fashion international.

Highlights from the week included appearances by Agyness Deyn, who modeled for Ellus, and local Gisele Bundchen who walked for Colcci, as well as the runway presentations of popular Brazilian designers such as Alexandre Herchcovitch (who will also be showing at New York’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week), Osklen and Maria Bonita.
