The London Morning Series

London has been amazing. Stories, trends, things I’ve been seeing and doing are on the way when I return to Vancouver next week.  But in the meantime, here’s a little series of AM photobooth shots Carleen and I have been doing every morning.  Two shots a day.  It’s become a bit of a ritual so we’re rolling with it.  Please note that the second photo from the first day is NSFW so I’m not posting it.

Stay tuned for photos over the next 3 days as well.

London, London, Here I Come

airportfairmont lounge, YVR

I wish I could tell you I was going for London Fashion Week.  But a flurry of other forces are taking me to the UK, and sadly I will miss out on the last couple days of runway shows entirely.

I have, however, seemed to become a master at the art of packing.  My suitcase and garment bag are ready to rock: the outfits are planned with an assortment of corresponding footwear (Pour la Victoire gladiator heels, Farylrobin black riding boots, vintage brown weave boots, vintage brown sandals, and b/w snakeskin slingbacks), and the accessories packed.

One strategic method I always follow when traveling is to wear biggest, heaviest garments on the plane – so I am waddling up to the gate wearing my black boots, long sleeve striped shirt, navy blazer, obakki triangle scarf, and of course a larry.  I think I could even squeeze another layer in there without looking like I’m smuggling a rubber tire around my waist.  My packing team (yes you need a team to model for…plus wine, and yahtzee is the reward when you’re finished) was joking that I could always try walking through security with shoes on my hands if there wasn’t sufficient room in my suitcase.  I wonder if they’d object? (update: my luggage just clocked in at 22.5 kilos – just shy of the 23 limit!).

I hope to be uploading some videos and quick blog posts during my trip, perhaps even some London style shots.  When I visited Wales a few years ago the street style was treacherous, so we shall see how fashion is faring now in that part of the world.  I’m sure L-town won’t disappoint.

Any suggestions on not-t0-be-missed activities in the city? Favourite restaurants/drinking holes?  I will also be spending half my trip down on the South West coast, and the second half in London proper.

Tally ho!

Big Ass, Kick Ass Wardrobe Sale

This one sounds like the mother of all sales.  Karen Munnis, a stylist and costume designer, is partnering up with another stylist, Estelle Richard, to purge all of their wares from every film, TV and photo shoot they’ve ever worked.

That means full size runs in just about everything.  Vintage, new, used, men’s, women’s, shoes, accessories, scarves.  Plus laundry supplies, hangers, robes, and cozy coats.

Karen has worked with Chloe Sevigny and Lou Doillon in Sisters, the Kaya MTV series, Mariana’s Trench music videos, lots of MOWs starring Sean Young, Efren Remirez, Anne Archer, and Chad Allen, plus there are some choice retro pieces from a BBC show on Mt. St. Helen’s eruption.  So while you may not find pieces from Sevigny’s Opening Ceremony line, you might find a jacket she wore on set.

CCMA Awards Wrap-Up

The Canadian Country Music Awards were on Sunday and I was at the backstage gift lounge with larry. gc’s for all the VIPs and celebs.  Rachel Zottenberg from the grace-gallery was my partner in prime, and despite having a very long day in the lounge it was incredibly memorable and we had a blast.

larry does ccma'sall photos by the lovely, the wonderful, the amazing Heather Watson – check out her whole CCMA set!

Early in the morning we met Jason Priestley.  Yes, Brandon Walsh of 90210 fame.  Brian Austen Green was always my favourite but you can’t be picky when it comes to meeting 90210 stars.  Jason and I chatted about his daughter’s birthday party, in which they had a petting zoo and an alpaca came along, and he was very impressed that I managed to keep everything for “larry.” local to BC.  Heather Watson snapped this photo of us – it was so cute, he got sandwiched in between Rachel and I and had to get on his tippy toes just to reach this height:

walsh!

To be honest I didn’t know who most of the people cruising through the room were.  You could tell who the ‘important’ ones were by the number of photographers following them around, and whether or not they had a personal shopper escorting them through the lounge.  I’m not one to get too hot and bothered by celebrities, and Rachel told me something her Dad once said to her as a kid…he said if you put photos of people up on your wall, they become idols.  And if you idolize them, then you’ll never be like them – but you already are like them.  They’re just people.

That being said, I absolutely could NOT resist a photo with one of the Canucks, even if just to give my brothers something to gloat about to their friends.  Here’s me (late in the day, right after I had my hair done by celebrity stylist Jami Symons from AG Hair, and swapped into my Obakki dress) with Alex Burrows:

burrows!

I was quickly off to the Factor post awards red carpet reception at the Hyatt, where there were about 1,000 people milling about.  It was a bit strange that tickets were available to the public, as the stars were cruising around the room without any segregation at all.  Which is nice, but incredibly rare in my experience.  Got a few more photos with some of the people I met in the gift lounge, all of whom were so nice and polite and remembered exactly who I was.

From here there were two parties to attend: one at the Shark Club, and the other at the Cellar.  We opted to go straight to the Cellar, which was a good thing as the guest list was extremely tight and I was very lucky to get in.  Open bar, jam packed with the who’s who of the awards attendees, and intimate performances by some of the musicians.

Here’s a camera phone shot of Dean Brody (what a heartthrob! chatted with him a few times in the evening) on stage:

what a guy

A big hello to all of the wonderful gift lounge attendees and participants I met that day.  What an experience!

The Makeshift Project

Designer Natalie Purschwitz has undertaken an impressive new concept with her latest endeavour, the Makeshift Project. Her goal is to wear only things she has made herself, for an entire year. The project began on September 1, 2009 and has seen Natalie make a few pairs of shoes, undergarments, clothing, and even glasses (with reused lenses) since the project began 9 days ago.

The rules are a bit fuzzy but Natalie is ironing out the kinks as she goes. So far she has determined that her entire wardrobe must be made out of new or used materials – but simply altering an existing garment is not quite good enough by her standards. Items that fall within the ‘wardrobe’ category include clothes, purses, shoes and undergarments. items that could be considered ‘tools’ – like her phone, or iPod case – are not included. She’s also leaving makeup and hair accessories out of the mix this time around.

Purschwitz was the owner of Gastown’s famed Hunt & Gather boutique, which was nestled on Carrall St at the mouth of Blood Alley. Hunt & Gather closed its doors in March 2009, though the clothing label is still available at select boutiques, and also online through her website.

For daily DIY inspiration and to keep tabs on what one of Vancouver’s most talented designers is up to on a daily basis, point your browser to the Makeshift Project and see how she strikes the balance between making/clothing/living throughout the next year!
