Beyond Pink: Young Women In Business

YWiB presents Beyond Pink

Just received word on this very cool seminar geared towards young female entrepreneurs.  The conference will host workshops, bring impressive panelists to the table, and initiate roundtable discussions.  I’m inspired already.

Speakers include Patricia Graham, the EiC of the Vancouver Sun (I had the pleasure of hearing her speak at an intimate knitting retreat in Pemberton years ago, would love to connect with her again); Devon and Judy Brooks from the Blo Blow Dry Bar; and Allison Mack who stars in the TV series Smallville, among many many other esteemed speakers.

350 delegates are expected to attend the conference, and there’s still time for you to register.  I highly recommend you do – I am postponing a trip so that I can attend!  Registration is open until October 30 – learn more details on the YWiB site.

Vampyre Weekend at the VIFC

True Bloodgrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Vampires: a current obsession in film, TV and other storytelling mediums that needs no introduction, whose popularity has risen and fallen in waves since the inception of the commonly identified vampire in the 18th century.  True Blood, Twilight, The Vampire Diaries – no matter what the storyline (or how bad the acting), the allure of the vampire has overtaken just about everyone, even those who have tried to resist the fad.

The Vancouver International Film Centre has planned a fun-filled Halloween weekend that will cater to your obsession, screening 11 vampire-related films between Oct 30-Nov 1.  Selected titles range from black and white classics from the 1920’s and 30’s such as London After Midnight and Mark of the Vampire, to more modern favourites such as Let the Right One In.  If you fancy a side of humour in your vampire stories, don’t miss Vampire’s Kiss with Nicolas Cage.

They’ve got the best lineup on Halloween night:

Let the Right One In

Let the Right One In at 4:30 pm, a film which I would love to see again on the big screen..

Habit

Habit at 8:15 pm, shot on 35mm and taking place in NYC on Halloween night, this one looks intriguing and adopting more of a modern take on the vampire rather than a literal interpretation with fangs and the whole bit.

Rabid

Rabid at 10:20 pm, directed by David Cronenberg and taking place in Montreal.  You gotta love a good Canadian vampire flick, especially when your blood-thirsty protagonist is a woman.

Vampyr

Vampyr at midnight, this is one of the b&w goodies from 1932 and has just been digitally remastered.  VIFC calls it “one of the strangest and most beguiling films in the entire horror canon,” so you can count on it scaring the jeepers right out of you.

I’ll leave you with one last bit of vampire sexiness to tide you over until next weekend, from Queen of the Damned (don’t judge me):

Obakki Warehouse Sale

The much-anticipated Obakki warehouse sale is back!  Scheduled for October 23 through the weekend to the 25th, this is where you’ll find high-end designer clothing that’s both designed and manufactured in Vancouver.

obakki

Most items will likely be priced under $50, and you can expect to find a range of fabulous clothes for both men and women: jackets, dresses, skirts, pants, and everything else under the moon.  Samples from the current FW09/10 collection will be available, as will samples from previous seasons – all in addition to tons of production stock from past seasons.

Anyone who reads this blog knows I am a huge fan of Obakki, so it should be no surprise for me to tell you that I will be restocking my wardrobe at this sale – and maybe buying a few Christmas presents as well…I think I’ve earned some credit over the years for making my brothers look a little sharper with tailored blazers and collared shirts wrapped under the Christmas tree.
