Bombay Brow Bar

Yaletown is quickly becoming the destination for single-service beauty boutiques – Blo gets your hair styled with a quick blow-dry, Noir Lash Lounge will fix you up with semi-permanent lash extensions, and now Bombay Brow Bar has joined the lot with Indian eyebrow threading.

I visited the small but plush brow bar on their opening day and the place was bustling, ambushed with the overgrown brows of walk-ins.  Four armchairs inhabit the room – which keeps a steady flow of Bollywood videos playing, Indian Vogue on hand for reading, and delicious chai tea for sipping.

The master threaders are also schooled in waxing and tweezing, so although their specialty is threading you can opt for any removal process you like.  I was in and out in 30 minutes, and what a difference a manicured brow makes.

Bombay Brow Bar does brows for boys as well, as well as eyebrow tinting.

Downtown Vancouver ArtWalk 2010

This is quite likely one of the most exciting things that will be happening in Vancouver during the Olympics – at least for locals. The Downtown Vancouver ArtWalk will see 10 vacant spaces in the Gastown district converted into temporary “pop-up” galleries, with dozens of additional pre-existing locations included on a 3-day art tour spanning from the Downtown Eastside through Chinatown and into Gastown.

Here’s a sneak peek at some of the spaces being converted into pop-up galleries:

Vancouverites will recognize that this block of buildings in Gastown has been under renovation/reconstruction for years – and the doors are finally being opened.  It’s pretty magical – after so many years of construction, you begin to feel that it’s simply perpetual and will never end.  The ArtWalk is a christening of sorts for these spaces, that have been unused for so long.

A diverse range of Vancouver’s top visual artists are installing works into the spaces over the coming week for the official launch on February 12: Raif Adelberg, Ronan Boyle, Bienvenido Cruz, Andy Dixon, The Dark, Kris Krug, Malcolm Levy, Christian Nicolay, Jeff Petry, Office Supplies Inc., and Indigo Daydreamer are just a few examples of the talent you’ll find.  And of course, you can find LARRY. in the Obakki store at 44 Water st throughout the ArtWalk and the Olympics.

On Andy Dixon, don’t miss his opening at the grace-gallery tomorrow night (February 5) for his new collection, Such Events Have Led Us Here.

Here is Andy’s preview:

“This is a story.

INCIDENT TWO:
A dog named Jorge braves the traffic of a Santiago highway to pull a wounded dog to safety.

INCIDENT THREE:
Lulu, a pot-bellied pig, saves her owner’s life by throwing herself into highway traffic in order to draw attention to the fact that her owner is having a heart attack.

INCIDENT ONE:
I am born.

INCIDENT FIVE:
You read this.

INCIDENT FOUR:
I write down INCIDENTS TWO and THREE, but feel as though the story is incomplete without also mentioning INCIDENTS ONE, FOUR, and FIVE.

The End.”

Obakki FW10 Video Lookbook

Obakki’s F/W 2010 video lookbook was released this week, and it’s edgy as all hell.  Previous Obakki campaigns evoked romance, softness, and nostalgia for me – so this campaign is not only a far departure, but a full turnaround from those sentiments.  It’s hard, edgy, and dark, and leaves me clamouring for a shot of Jameson’s and a cigarette.

OBAKKI 2010 from NOBASURA on Vimeo.

This video bleeds visuals that are quintessentially Vancouver: a coy couple hiding in a dark narrow bar flirting over whiskey, trudging through construction-filled streets and traipsing across bridges, topping it all off with a bonfire at my favourite park in the city.  That could spell any night of the week in my books.  The Obakki Man is a bearded hunk in leather (check) and the Obakki Woman is independent and coarsely feminine.

With beautiful S/S 2010 pieces arriving in the flagship Obakki store in Gastown now, it’s almost a shame we have to wait a whole season to get our hands on more winter wares. But who am I kidding, that means we have an entire summer to keep ourselves occupied. If this video is any indication, I can safely predict that a steadfast combination of Obakki, whiskey and rock’n'roll will factor in to my own adventures.

I know this is going to be amazing.  Victoria Potter of famed fashion blog DemiCouture is throwing a sale at the W2 building this weekend, and just about everything under the moon will be for sale.  I have pillaged numerous items from her closet in the past, so I can testify to the fact that there will most certainly be plenty of delicious finds to be had.
