Mom on Skateboarders

hail strathcona, full of distaste

Mom: “What is with all of these adult men on skateboards? It’s ridiculous. Grow up.”

We witness the potentially gruesome elimination of a speeding skater narrowly greasing past a truck turning left, and Mom becomes annoyed at the inconvenience of such idiocy around us.  We pass a third grizzly skateboarder who’s is either a ripe young age of 17 or has eclipsed age 30 (anyone’s guess), and the taunting begins:

“Hey, I like your shiny wheels,” and “Nice paint job” she says, barely able to stifle her laughter as she mockingly imitates a girl going for the guise.

“Ooh, where’d you get that toque?” Mom adds, as we conveniently pass the hub of hipster at Main/7th, laughter erupting in her Jeep as a stoplight pauses us between Gene and Foundation for a prime time view.

We eye the gaggle of freshly caffeinated adultescents culminating on the street outside the cafe, and I remind her that the toque is a necessary accessory to the skateboard – even during summer.  Then silently vowed never to date a skateboarder (ever again), if at the very least to spare him a lifetime of misery enduring constant humiliation and good-natured jabbing from my family.  Although I will allow bearded hunks and nothing my mom can say will ever stop me.

Japanspiration

I’m off to the Yukon in a few short days to hole myself up in a cabin and knit the bulk of the next larry. collection, and attempting to stuff my brain with as much as I can before I surrender to the wilderness about Whitehorse.  Japan Fashion Week just went down and, fantastically far out hair-do’s aside, there were lots of interesting design elements that registered on my radar:

I love this boy-scout scarf by Trove.

Intensely hot braided/knit scarf by In-Process by Hall/Ohara.  It looks to be of varying widths, and for a split second could almost be mistaken for a very long hybrid of hair/yarn wrapped around her body.

Kamishima Chinami neck adornments.  And see what I mean about the hair?  I think I had at least one Barbie that ended up similarly coiffed after a botched haircut resulting from my imaginative experiments as a pre-teen hair stylist.

Somarta.  Thrills with frills.

Gut’s Dynamite Cabarets.  The hardware is a little country-western, which I don’t like all too much aesthetically but still have some latent appreciation for.  And the fringe, oohhhh the fringe (positive inflection on the ‘oohhhh’).  I know it’s like 3 seasons old but who the f cares.

Entoptic.  I feel like I’ve done a gazillion sketches and visualizations of this type of loose weave, and began to experiment with this in the ‘Art of Giving‘ pieces I made for the Grace-Gallery charity show using re-purposed textiles from Our Social Fabric back in December 2009, but this is a brilliant execution of the type of look I am going for in my next endeavours with weaving.

Lark 5 Year Anniversary

Today marks Lark’s 5 year birthday in Mount Pleasant, and they’re celebrating with shopping, wine, and food – with proceeds going to the Growing Chefs program for Mount Pleasant Elementary School (cute).

There will be wine tastings, a silent auction, and of course shopping the new spring items in store.  Lark carries beautiful lines so there should be plenty to tempt you with!

More details on the FB event page here.

Daniela Edburg’s Surreal Knitting Photos

A friend forwarded me these pretty intense knit-inspired images by photographer Daniela Edburg.  Coming off a Tim Burton buzz, I can’t help but associate these grandiose and staged images with Alice in Wonderland aesthetics, conveying a similar sense of intriguing eeriness.  The rest of her photographs are markedly darker than the ones I’m presenting, such as the “Killing Time” series which depicts humans as roadkill with mock insides and false limbs sprawled across the pavement.

Having toyed with the idea of doing some “larry.” installations with yarn in various locales and documenting the process and product with photographs, this is a really great example of what can be done with a bit of imagination.

larry. Endish of Season Sale

All remaining FW09 stock will be offered at 25% off retail.  Scented soy “larry. will keep you warm” candles are on sale for $15.  And we’re giving away a CRAVE Vancouver book with every purchase (while supplies last).

FB event page with additional details here.

There will be wine. It’s gonna be amazing. That is all.

Knit Inspiration: Rag & Bone, Pringle, Malandrino

First up Rag & Bone RTW 2010:

bulky knit layers, strung gloves around the neck – through the arm holes would have been much too childish.

belted scarf, yes.

i have been trying to solve this muff problem for a while. they’re great but you have to hold on to them, which is a drag.  Rag & Bone does the muff necklace, brilliant.

On the topic of muffs, these wrist cuffs by Pringle of Scotland are in the same vein:

And lastly, Malandrino:

that purse is amazing.  I am really onto the concept of doing yarn fringes in my upcoming collection.

so badass.
