Pop-Up Shops in Vancouver

Two local designers will be setting up temporary shop in Gastown soon… Mono is launching the Monoshop: Provisional on August 5th, while lily & jae is shacking up in One of a Few beginning August 26.

monoshop: provisional

Mono’s on the right track with the notion to take the pop-up shop concept on the road, with plans to travel to Toronto, New York, Los Angeles, and eventually Europe, selling the latest collections and projects by designer Heather Martin.

lily & jae will be sharing space with One of a Few starting late August and kicking things off with a fantastic launch event – not only will you find lily + jae items in this shop, but also vintage pieces hand picked by designer Judith Feller.

Pop-up shops are the word.

Vancouver Olympics Lost and Found Sale

Vancouver Olympics: the Lost & Found Sale

Now this is a sale worth blogging about: imagine the treasure trove of lost goods left over from the manic weeks of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics.  It’s great to see that the proceeds will be going to a worthy cause – the Network of Inner City Community Services Society, so families and children in the Strathcona, Downtown East Side, and Grandview Woodlands will receive additional support.

The sale began today and will continue to Saturday, July 31.  I will definitely be checking this out tomorrow – probably a good opportunity to stock up on an extra cell phone (I seem to lose my Blackberry every 3 months), a camera, and who knows what else they’ll have – but it sounds like the selection will be all across the board, even in terms of clothing.

875 E Hastings, just West of Campbell St. 11am-6pm. Cash only.

dace Fall 2010 Collection Now Available

Fashion videos are the word.

I was guiding a friend through my closet this morning as she prepared to dress up for a stagette this evening, when she remarked that I had “a lot” of dace in my closet.  Yes, yes I do indeed.  One of my favourite lines ever, and they’re based in Vancouver which means I get to harass them in person at their studio when I’m itching to shop!

Shop now and receive this adorable little stationery set by The Paper Whale with your order.

I love the new collection – the best equestrian man trousers a girl could ask for, and perfect sweaters & cardigans that are stylish enough for the city but rugged and subtle enough for the country. I’m also especially fond of the Terri Blouse:

Larry FW 2010/2011 from Bienvenido Cruz on Vimeo.

We just finished shooting the catalogue images for the larry. FW 2010/11 collection yesterday, and like some kind of serendipity a video from our campaign/lookbook shoot from last month at Sugar Studios made its way into the public realm.

Hope you enjoy!

This is East Van: A Community Photo Project

Accepting photos of anything / anyone / anywhere in East Van.  A self-published book will be released once all the photos are selected; each image gets a full page with the artists’ name and contact info.  No cost to submit, but no payment either.

Sounds pretty cool, and hopefully will represent the broad range of people/places/activities/etc that make this neighbourhood what it is.

Email up to 5 images to submit[at]thisiseastvan[dot]com for consideration before the August 15th deadline, and visit the This is East Van website for additional information.

Motto’s Final Week in Gastown

Motto began as a distribution company for Switzerland, initially specializing in magazines and growing to firmly support the distribution of independent, artist-published books and zines.  A Motto storefront enjoys a permanent residence in Berlin, and also Zurich, but the concept and collection has traveled around the world with temporary shops popping up in cities like Vilnius, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Moscow, Stuttgart, Athens, Seoul, Tokyo, Paris – and for one more week, Vancouver.

The Motto Storefront in Gastown opened May 15 in conjunction with Artspeak and runs until July 22.  Weekly talks relating to the general topic of contemporary art publishing have enjoyed a popular run, and Vancouverites have just 9 more days to browse Motto Gastown’s collection of experimental, small run, and independently produced books, magazines, and fanzines.  Thinking about all the passion and creativity jammed within bound pages gives me goosebumps.  It’s akin to the thrill of browsing through antique books, smelling the old paper and marveling at how language has evolved away from words like “agreeable” and “needn’t” – except with new art books.
