The newly minted Roden Gray boutique in Gastown is a retail location to add to your must-visit list. The 900 square foot custom-designed space shelters avant-garde design by respected labels like Comme des Garçons, Filson, Nice Collective and Wings + Horns.
Also in house is a huge illuminated vintage mirror which dominates the space, and refurbished burnt Douglas fir benches that offer a place to rest those weary feet.
Brought to you by Rob Lo and Davie Fernandes, proprietors of dutil. denim just around the corner, Roden Gray caters to the man who prefers casual yet quality clothing. The store manager, Ryan Smith, tells us that quite a few women are perusing the store as well – most often shopping for their partners, but we think it could also be the draw of unisex “anti-perfume” fragrances by Comme des Garçons or the current “girls will be boys” trend in which masculine designs are sneaking their way into female wardrobes.
These just arrived in the mail today – finally! After walking away from these Faryl Robin Otis boots at Umeboshi to “think about it” I was very distraught when I returned and they were, of course, all gone. Dino Pessione, who owns the shop with his wife Neda and sister-in-law Lita Adampirae, started thinking about opening a quality Swedish imports leather shop years ago while visiting family in Sweden. For a month he watched his brother-in-law, Hamid Adampirae, make custom leather shoes by hand, and they began talking about bringing the shoes to Canada. Hamid runs a 15-year old shoe shop with two others in the small town of Hedemora, about 4 hours north of Stockholm, and the business gained a strong reputation after constructing a custom pair of leather shoes for the King.

Loving the new window display at Obakki, these uniform plastic pieces catch the light beautifully.
Deborah Richardson and Jessica Elliott are one of those mother-daughter teams that seem able to accomplish just about anything, and with the recent opening of the Velvet Room Boutique in the heart of Kerrisdale it’s clear they have put their respective skills to excellent use in creating a beautiful shopping destination with wide appeal.
Decorated in French provincial style with clean black and white tiled floors and feminine accents of purple and pink, the Velvet Room caters to a wide spectrum of shoppers ranging from – you guessed it – mothers to their daughters, and everyone in between.
