AN EVENING with Kim Cathers and Leigh Righton
My dear friend Kim Cathers has been busting her chops putting this amazing event together, and it’s shaping up to be one helluva night. Fashion show, drinks, music, and photography, with proceeds going towards victims of the flood in Pakistan via the Canadian Red Cross.
Kim has transformed a nice big studio in the Dominion building to accommodate herself and another fashion designer with work rooms, adjoined by an open retail space that will showcase their work plus that of a featured designer. Tonight is the (surprise!) announcement that larry. will be the inaugural featured designer in this innovative retail/work space, so come by and check out a selection of pieces from my collection in addition to photos by Leigh Righton, and pieces from Kim’s new kdon line.
The fashion show is styled by Kim, so will of course be amazing – this girl’s got style, people.
See you there!
me and a ‘stached lady in brighton, UK
OK I admit it: I’m a bit of a sucker for facial hair (which is really bad news for a girl who lives in East Van.) I even wrote a song with my old roomie Liz entitled, ‘The Bearded Hunk,’ and when I reach the $500 mark in donations for the Nuba Movember fundraising group for prostate cancer, then perhaps I will post the amazingly crafted lyrics to this little ditty as a thank-you. You will probably laugh right out loud when you read the lyrics, though it’s possible I might be giving myself too much credit.
So please, help a girl help a boy out and donate some pocket change or bills towards the cause. The first week of Movember is always the worst because everyone is clean shaven and fresh-faced and that’s so not my bag. The only things that will get me through it are 1) dreams of bearded and ‘stached hunks, ie. weeks 2, 3 and 4 of November, and 2) your money towards the Movember Canada charity.
DONATE HERE! And tell all your friends. Especially the handsome hunky bearded ones.
PS: All the male staff at Nuba are extremely cute so I would watch their Movember moustache growth progress very closely.

Today marks Lark’s 5 year birthday in Mount Pleasant, and they’re celebrating with shopping, wine, and food – with proceeds going to the Growing Chefs program for Mount Pleasant Elementary School (cute).
There will be wine tastings, a silent auction, and of course shopping the new spring items in store. Lark carries beautiful lines so there should be plenty to tempt you with!
More details on the FB event page here.
For those of you in Vancouver, you may have noticed that over the holidays Obakki pledged to donate one warm jacket or blanket to a local shelter for every in-store purchase – but now that the madness of Christmas and the New Year is over, the giving doesn’t have to stop there. Obakki Creative Director and Owner Treana Peake has long been an advocate of human rights and other humanitarian efforts, and has personally traveled to Africa a number of times (read Treana’s blog entries on her most recent trip here.) The Obakki Foundation was borne of these ventures, and a new fashion collection reflects some of the poignant answers children in orphanages gave when Treana asked them three basic questions: What makes you happy? What makes you sad? What makes you afraid?

There are a number of ways to support the foundation: you can purchase clothing or accessories at the flagship store in Gastown or online (women’s, men’s, and children’s items available); you can make a monetary donation through the store or online; or you can purchase a pre-packaged first aid or school kit.

100% of all proceeds go directly back to Foundation projects. A shipping container is being sent from Canada to Africa in a few weeks time, so move fast! Treana is traveling back to Cameroon in May to personally distribute these supplies to where they are needed most.

Raw Canvas is a social lounge, gallery, cafe and paint studio in the heart of Yaletown that will play host to a unique charity event on September 24. Will Paint for Food will raise funds for the Niapele Project, a charity which feeds Liberian children through the School Nutrition Initiative.
Three 1-hour painting sessions will be held on the evening of September 24, with each session accommodating up to 20 participants. Resident and guest painters of Raw Canvas will be on hand to help you flex those artistic muscles, and your ticket to the event not only buys you a canvas and raffle tickets, but will also provide 495 meals for Liberian children.
There are numerous ways for you to get involved. If you are an artist, Raw Canvas is looking for guest painters who help instruct session participants. If you have product that could be raffled off, you could donate an item. Or you can buy a ticket and have fun painting for an hour or so!

Tonight the YouthCO AIDS Society, now celebrating their 15th year, is holding a charity event at CANVAS Lounge in Gastown that will celebrate all things circus related. Burlesque, contortionists and circus folk, what more could you ask for in a party?
I donated a larry. piece to the silent auction, proceeds of which will go towards prevention education and youth impacted by HIV/AIDS. Looking forward to seeing what’s in the silent auction, I hear there are some choice items to be bid on.
If you’ve got $50 to spare, you should definitely come down tonight – it’s for a great cause, and this certainly won’t be a stuffy charity event. I will have 3 of my loveliest ladies on my arm – Shallom Johnson, kdon, and The Conveyor Belt’s newest contributor Jenn Wint – so it’s sure to be a party.
