William Rast FW09 Collection at NYFW

The Fall/Winter 2009 William Rast “New America” collection was by far one of my favourites that I’ve seen at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.  Jeans, tees, plaid shirts and wicked fringed leather accented with studs, embroidery, badges and feathers, most definitely a throwback to “biker culture” and “American denim heritage,” as the line is described.

The colours were dark and monochromatic for the most part, and where hues did seep in they were subtle and faded.  Everything looked like it had been loved for 20 years, the kind of pieces you bring with you on a road trip that you throw on out of a suitcase and look absolutely killer.

Under the creative direction of Justin Timberlake, Trace Ayala with Marcella and Johan Lindeberg, the “New America” collection drew inspiration from classic movies like Rumble Fish and Thelma & Louise, and emphasized the 5 pocket jean and “couture execution” of traditional Americana pieces like the denim jacket, biker jacket and jean shirt.

Love love love this deep v red plaid shirt and dusty grey leather jacket:

The mens shirts and tees were all very long, and denim was paired with sharply tailored suit jackets or sturdy leather coats:

This grey jacket had black leather sleeves with fringe all down the back seam, and was by far one of my favourite pieces out of the entire collection. Long fringe adorned many of the leather jackets, especially the women’s, but was mostly featured on the backs of the pieces so it was both a subtle and dynamic touch, depending on your angle:

The cape. It’s back in, people:

Have I talked yet about how amazing the fringed shoes were? Reminds me of my Ken Diamond moccasins, but more like a shoe and less like a moccasin:

When the show was over, it was almost embarrassing how excited the crowd was to get a glimpse of Justin Timberlake. Everyone stood up out of their seats with cameras in hand, buzzing with anticipation. Get a hold of yourselves, people!

The show was well attended by a lot of celebrities, including Paris Hilton. I think she was following us, as she showed up at the basement of La Esquina the following evening and stood next to us at the bar before being seated with her sister Nicky to devour some corn on the cob.

Denim Guide for Men

PRPS: A Product with a Purpose

Choosing the right denim can be tricky business, especially when graduating into the world of premium (and pricey) denim.  Our best advice is to keep it simple.  One of the primary errors shoppers make when shopping for premium denim is to go overboard with embellishments, opting for a more ‘unique’ look to justify paying the increased cost.  Remember: ultra-distressed, bedazzled or otherwise adorned denim is not what you’re paying for, gentlemen.  The value is in the fit, quality and durability – and the likelihood that the style will remain classic and cool for many seasons to come.  Here are a few more pointers to guide you in the fitting room:

Raw denim is ultra stiff, and many shy away from this untreated jean in the stores because of this attribute.  Most denim is washed after the dyeing process to soften the jean; raw denim is unwashed and not artificially distressed, so it’s about as pure as you can get.  If you’re going to go raw, make sure the fit is skin tight….if you have to ask for assistance in getting the zipper up that’s a good start, as the denim will expand about an inch in the waist.  After 6 months of reckless wear and tear, these will be the most form-fitting, comfortable pair of jeans you own.

This spring, look for slim denim in a dark wash to pair with dressier items such as a tucked in dress shirt for casual but structured style.  Have a look inside the jean at the selvage edge (located on the outseam, this is the natural edge and typically found only on denim woven in continuous thread with old-style shuttle looms), as this is a good indicator of quality.

Our top brand choices for men’s denim this spring include APC, Acne, Earnest Sewn, Paper Denim & Cloth, PRPS [shown above], Habitual, Nudie, Kasil, 7 For All Mankind, and the perpetually classic Levi’s.

Naked and Famous Denim

nakedfamous.jpg

On February 22, dutil. launched Montreal’s Naked and Famous Denim line in Western Canada with an evening soiree at that attracted the masses. Droves of young denim aficionados flocked to dutil.’s small W. Cordova retail location for a night of drinks, eats and music, keeping the party at maximum capacity the entire night.

Naked and Famous Denim is “the all-raw-all-Japanese-all-cheap” line by designer Brandon Svarc, who took cues from popular lines like A.P.C. and Cheap Monday to create simple raw denim styles for men and women that are free of branding or elaborate trimmings. Fabric is imported from a highly-regarded denim mill in Japan, but the jeans themselves are manufactured in Canada and available at surprisingly reasonable prices. The name Naked and Famous is intended to poke fun at “glamour” brands that sell cheap cookie-cutter denim at astronomical prices “simply because Jessica Simpson wears them.” The premise of this line is simple: no gimmicks, just the best fabrics in the world available in a few modern fits. Naked and Famous has even developed their own silk denim, which blends cotton with 30% silk for a unique and luxurious result. When personality is inherent in the denim itself, it becomes clear that embellishments are entirely unnecessary. Naked and Famous Denim is available in Vancouver at dutil. (303 W. Cordova)

Fab Clothing Store

fab_7.jpg

Fab Clothing started out 7 years ago when they opened up their premium denim store on W. 4th in Kitsilano, and it didn’t take long to earn recognition as one of the top retailers in Vancouver for the hottest jeans in town. In fact, they stock dozens and dozens of brands to ensure that if you want it, they got it. With the November launch of their second location, this one snugly settled in the heart of Kerrisdale, owners Yoel and Anne Farzan now have even more square footage to carry their extensive collection of denim from all over the world. Yoel wanted the new flagship to have a New York or Los Angeles inspired quality to it, so he went on an exploratory trip to LA with designer Ruth Jankelowitz, of Janks Designs, where they scoped out various stores and developed the Fab store concept from there.
