NYFW Show and Tell at RAW Canvas

Kris Krug, Shallom Johnson and I will be doing a slideshow presentation of our trip to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York this Wednesday evening at RAW Canvas.  We were invited to present photos and some of our favourite moments by the wildly successful Vancouver Fashion Industry meetup group, and jumped at the opportunity to share our experience with other Vancouverites.

Doors are at 7pm, and the slideshow will begin at 7:30.  We’ll have a selection of photos of the fashion shows, ‘what we’re wearing’ shots featuring pieces by local designers who sponsored us by providing amazing clothes and accessories for the trip, and various other cherished images.  Shallom and I will be touching on some of the overall trends, and we’ll all be sharing some of our most interesting adventures and stories from inside the tents.

I’ll take this opportunity to thank those designers who generously allowed us to represent Vancouver’s amazing talent while in New York: Adhesif, dace, deadboys clubhouse by Raif Adelberg, kdon by Kim Cathers, Dominic Designs, Elika Designs, Erin Templeton, Fiveleft Leather, Obakki, Pacificthorn, and PARTS by heather.

Looking forward to seeing those of you in Vancouver at RAW Canvas on March 4 – 1046 Hamilton St., 7pm.  There will be wine, music and networking in addition to the slideshow presentation – fun times!

Please RSVP for the event if you are able to so we can best accommodate everyone.

Models Tripping at NYFW: (Near) Runway Bails 2009

Ok the headline is a bit misleading.  Neither of these models bailed per se but they did trip up in their heels, both during the Arise Magazine African Fashion Collective show.  And both did a good job of dealing with the situation – took the heels off and carried on.

Q&A With Scout Magazine

Scout Magazine threw a quick and dirty q&a my way recently – check out the piece here.

Scout is a fantastic online magazine that covers food, culture, life and style in Vancouver, the ultimate go-to guide to good living.  Great for restaurant reviews and discovering what other cool folks in the city are up to.

larry. does grace: Thursday, January 8

Shallom from Stylefinds just wrote a lovely little piece on the larry. show at grace gallery, which goes down at 8pm on Thursday January 8.  It will be super good times, and you’re invited.  It’s free, there will be adult beverages for sale, and plus the pieces will be on the wall begging to be touched!

“Ever since Terri started making these scarves, I’ve been coveting a larry. for my very own. This week, I and many others will have a chance to get our hands on all of Terri’s current designs, as well as one brand new scarf that was designed specifically for this exhibit. “I’m incredibly excited for the show”, Terri says with a huge smile. “I’ve never done anything like it before, and am thrilled to be working with Rachel on this. Collaborating with her on ‘The Gracey,’ the custom piece I made for the show, was lots of fun.”

That’s just a snippet of Shallom’s piece, read the rest here and see you tomorrow night!

Check out the Facebook Event page here for more deets.

DIY Christmas Gift Ideas for Children

I don’t think anything is more cherish-worthy than a handmade gift, and I set out this Christmas with high hopes of making gifts for my entire family this year.  It’s now nearly Christmas, and I though I haven’t gotten as far as I had hoped I have been having fun researching ideas for my little 8-month old niece.

Here are a few DIY gift ideas that I thought would be great for her, and would make nice Christmas gifts for little ones this Christmas:

1.  Flash Cards

A great gift for a new mom who’s interested in using flash cards with her baby as a learning tool.  What do you think are the most important words and images that an impressionable young infant needs to know?  If you already have kids, this could be a really fun project for you to work on together.

2.  Knit a stuffed animal

Knitting isn’t that tough, really.  If you use thick yarn and thick needles you should be able to jig up something that can be shaped into a hippopotamus-like form, just knit it big and felt it afterwards.  There’s some cute patterns for homemade stuffed animals here.  I found some great patterns for knit piglets, fishies and bunnies that I am about to make with some natural, un-dyed BC alpaca wool, then felt and stuff.

3.  Make matching outfits for child and stuffed animal

I used to have a Cabbage patch doll when I was little and my mom made us matching dresses – it was the coolest thing ever.  A while back, my mom knit up a monkey for a friend’s son, and made a little vest and scarf for the monkey and a matching one for the boy.  He loved wearing his vest and scarf and dragging his matching monkey around with him.  If you can sew or knit, you can do this!  Just keep the design simple – an apron dress for girls and a vest for the boys.

Will upload photos of how I make out.

BTW – sorry for the lack of posts lately, I’ve been struck with tonsillitis and bed-ridden since Sunday morning.  Finally starting to take a turn for the better – go penicillin!
