Genevieve Graham Studio Sale

Designer Genevieve Graham is hosting her inaugural monthly studio sale this weekend -  so you need to go, sip some wine, and try on some of her beautiful hand-crafted pieces.  While her line is available in retail locations, Genevieve wants to cultivate a one-on-one experience with her clients to create designs perfectly suited to them.  This is your opportunity to personally connect with the designer, if you so wish, or to just try some of her work on for size.

Gen is a master draper and has pretty much trademarked this bohemian, luxurious, yet simple style.  I want my entire closet to be filled with her creations – which it partially is, as she was previously a designer for Obakki and I have been collecting pieces from that Vancouver-based design house for years now.

This linen neck piece is amazing.  A simple and easy way to jazz up any simple outfit, night or day.

And as if I’m not completely, unabashedly in love with this knit piece:

So fantastic.  See you in the studio this month and every month thereafter!

Drop Genevieve a line to make an appointment, but I believe you’re also welcome to just drop by anytime with friends to check out her work.

Daniela Edburg’s Surreal Knitting Photos

A friend forwarded me these pretty intense knit-inspired images by photographer Daniela Edburg.  Coming off a Tim Burton buzz, I can’t help but associate these grandiose and staged images with Alice in Wonderland aesthetics, conveying a similar sense of intriguing eeriness.  The rest of her photographs are markedly darker than the ones I’m presenting, such as the “Killing Time” series which depicts humans as roadkill with mock insides and false limbs sprawled across the pavement.

Having toyed with the idea of doing some “larry.” installations with yarn in various locales and documenting the process and product with photographs, this is a really great example of what can be done with a bit of imagination.

Scandinavian Style at Urbanity

Urbanity is a familiar shop in Gastown that I pass often, though rarely venture into.  But after seeing some of the great pieces in store right now, I plan to go take a comprehensive sweep through the Danish, Norwegian and Swedish designs housed within the shop.

I love these NYGÃ…RDSANNA summer dresses, and the designRborg ring (below) could easily be a daily staple on one of my lucky digits.

I’m currently in the throes of designing and knitting for the Fall/Winter larry. collection, so learning about  small-scale knits from faraway countries is terrific inspiration.  These types of pieces are firmly in line with my current penchant for simple style, and garments that quite literally are woven with a story and history.

DIY Christmas Gift Ideas for Children

I don’t think anything is more cherish-worthy than a handmade gift, and I set out this Christmas with high hopes of making gifts for my entire family this year.  It’s now nearly Christmas, and I though I haven’t gotten as far as I had hoped I have been having fun researching ideas for my little 8-month old niece.

Here are a few DIY gift ideas that I thought would be great for her, and would make nice Christmas gifts for little ones this Christmas:

1.  Flash Cards

A great gift for a new mom who’s interested in using flash cards with her baby as a learning tool.  What do you think are the most important words and images that an impressionable young infant needs to know?  If you already have kids, this could be a really fun project for you to work on together.

2.  Knit a stuffed animal

Knitting isn’t that tough, really.  If you use thick yarn and thick needles you should be able to jig up something that can be shaped into a hippopotamus-like form, just knit it big and felt it afterwards.  There’s some cute patterns for homemade stuffed animals here.  I found some great patterns for knit piglets, fishies and bunnies that I am about to make with some natural, un-dyed BC alpaca wool, then felt and stuff.

3.  Make matching outfits for child and stuffed animal

I used to have a Cabbage patch doll when I was little and my mom made us matching dresses – it was the coolest thing ever.  A while back, my mom knit up a monkey for a friend’s son, and made a little vest and scarf for the monkey and a matching one for the boy.  He loved wearing his vest and scarf and dragging his matching monkey around with him.  If you can sew or knit, you can do this!  Just keep the design simple – an apron dress for girls and a vest for the boys.

Will upload photos of how I make out.

BTW – sorry for the lack of posts lately, I’ve been struck with tonsillitis and bed-ridden since Sunday morning.  Finally starting to take a turn for the better – go penicillin!

Christmas Deadline: Order Your Larry.

Fiona Garden Photography

I will be slammed in the coming weeks with Christmas markets and the like, selling the larry. stuff, so in the best interest of everyone who has expressed an interest in buying pieces as gifts I am setting the Christmas order deadline at November 30, 2008.  It is doubtful that I will be able to accommodate any orders after this point, as I only have two little hands and do all the knitting myself!

Please contact me at terri[at]wearelarry[dot]com for order inquiries.

BRRRRRR! Get your larry.

This ridiculously chilly weather means you need larry. Get ‘em while:

A: it’s cold, and

B: they’re hot.

We officially launch after the summer so stay tuned for that – in the meantime, you can purchase here.
