Yet another rumour out of the celebrity designer mill, this time concerning troubled singer Amy Winehouse and a possible collaboration with designer Fred Perry:
According to the tabloids, the Rehab singer let slip during a festive holiday that she is currently in negotiations with iconic British label Fred Perry and has already started sketching out a few of her ideas.
My jaw dropped at first, too, but could Winehouse actually have something valuable to contribute to the fashion world? A number of people seem to think so: Karl Lagerfeld built upon the Winehouse style for the Paris-Londres Metiers d’Art Chanel collection in 2007; cobbler Jonathan Kelsey crafted the ‘Amy’ stiletto in her name; and Roberto Cavalli declared the singer a fashion icon due to her unique look. Um, yeah…a 2-foot high beehive is unique, that’s for certain.
Let’s just hope the Winehouse coiff doesn’t become one of the emblematic features of this forthcoming collection.
Maybe I indulged in one too many glasses of shiraz before the Presets/Cut Copy show at the Commodore Ballroom on October 9th, because all I can remember is dancing my little heart out. Or maybe I wasn’t tipsy at all and the reason I don’t recall the particulars is because the music was so fucking prime and seamless that I had just one simple thought running through my mind: move.
Over some delicious beers with a dear friend today at Havana’s, we surveyed upcoming shows in Vancouver and man, are there a lot I want to attend. Here’s the rundown:
Radiohead, with Liars. Sold out, but I just scored a ticket within an hour of finding out I no longer have to work tomorrow. Huzzah!
Beck, with Band of Horses. August 28. Beck would be cool to see, but I am deadly obsessed with Band of Horses right now. And at the Orpheum…stellar.
!!!. August 31, at Richards. !!! pretty much sums up how I feel about this.
Steve Aoki, September 5 at the Commodore. At the Miss Sixty opening party at M Bank last summer, I danced so hard it will forever stand out in my memory as one of the sweatiest, sexiest nights ever.
Fleet Foxes, September 16, Richards. Not a dance party show, but a goodie nonetheless.
CSS, with Tilly and the Wall, September 17 at the Commodore. I got hooked on CSS after becoming enamoured with “Let’s make love and listen to Death From Above.”
The Raconteurs, September 18 at Malkin Bowl. I have never yet been to a show at the Malkin Bowl, if you can believe it. This has to change.
We are Wolves, September 27, the Bourbon. Very good live show, saw them at Pat’s Pub last time around and will definitely be going back for more.
Cold War Kids, September 28 at Richards. Thanks for tipping me off to this band, E-Roc.
Iron and Wine, October 7, Commodore. No friggin’ way am I missing this show.
Cut Copy, with the Presets, October 9 at the Commodore. Cut Copy at Richards last time around was a fantastic time, however I was feeling under the weather and couldn’t give’r on the dance floor. Never again.
Born Ruffians, with Plants and Animals, October 10 at Richards. Two supremely good bands, do not miss this show.
Black Kids, October 11 at Richards. These kids opened for Cut Copy last time around, lots of energy. Again, didn’t have the opportunity to dance.
Stereolab, October 19 at Commodore. Pretty, pretty.
Crystal Castles, October 27 at Commodore. Last show at Richards, they played with all the lights off. It was a bit annoying, so I danced and partied up on the balcony. Couldn’t see anything from downstairs anyway, so that was a good call. I’m willing to give them another chance.
See you at the venue(s)! Let me know if I missed any other amazing shows coming up..
(Backstreet Boys, September 4 at GM Place, anyone? I dare you!)
I just wanted to post an update notifying all our readers that The Conveyor Belt will be back to normal soon! With summer, a couple of personal losses, having to find a new home in Vancouver (not an easy task), and an upcoming camping trip, it’s been difficult to update daily as I so faithfully did before.
If you’re headed up to the Pemberton Festival this weekend, I think that:
A) you’re looney tunes, and
B) you must go find the Mondo Spider guys. They’re taking their 1,600 lb steel spider machine to the festival for all 40,000 fans to enjoy, so don’t miss it.
I am heading up to Cariboo Country for a couple of weeks with family and friends to fish, relax and put my head back on straight – but if I weren’t leaving this weekend I would certainly be enticed to snake my way through the Sea to Sky to see artists like Black Mountain, Buck 65, MSTRKRFT, Chromeo, and Metric up at Pemberton. I also would have left this morning to avoid the intense weekend traffic – good luck to whoever braves those roads! You could probably walk there faster than you could drive.
Also, please remember to keep voting for the FASHION Magazine Reporter Search – I will be away for the rest of the competition and won’t be able to remind folks to vote every day! It’s been a close race between Craig Long and myself for the Vancouver reporter position…so good luck to us both, we certainly need it!
Keep checking back, as Pariya and Carleen are still kicking around and have some interesting pieces to post in the near future. I hope everyone is enjoying some sunshine, wherever you are.
The rules: “List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they’re not any good, but they must be songs you’re really enjoying now, shaping your spring. Post these instructions in your blog along with your 7 songs. Then tag 7 other people to see what they’re listening to.”
This was my favourite music video as a kid and I’m feeling very nostalgic after watching it again. How fierce are those early 1980′s fashions, seriously…I wish ZZ Top and their magical harem of hotties showed up every time someone got bullied.
Oh, wait, they do:
I love how these videos are about pumping up the underdog and giving them the confidence, the clothes and the car to enable them to achieve their dreams. Plus you can pick up some amazing dance moves at the end of “Sharp Dressed Man.”
If anyone can find me a ZZ Top keychain, I will be supremely wowed.
