Miss Sixty F09 at NYFW: Highlights and Tweetalong

The Miss Sixty FW09 collection at New York Fashion Week was super rock ‘n roll, and after the flurry of photographers fussing over Mischa Barton, Coco Rocha and Rufus Wainwright in the front row settled and the lights dimmed, models took to a runway slathered in black paint to while the dance mix of Cherry Bomb by Joan Jett & the Blackhearts blasted from the speakers.

Creative director and co-founder Wichy Hassan created an 80′s inspired collection punctuated by bright prints and vibrant colours, featuring cinched waistlines, structured shoulders and stud detailing.  I was especially fond of the all the accessories – large handbags, oversized faux fur stoles lined with bright prints, motorcycle gloves and of course the shoes.

Hassan makes references to the work of photographer Richard Avedon in his pieces, and the line readily cites the “vitality and optimism” of the 80′s as inspiration for the Fall/Winter 2009 collection.  The line mixes “elegant sensuality, balanced excess,” and “hyper-feminine 80′s style.”

This was one of my favourite looks of the show, though I mistakenly perceived it as a dress when it is actually a ruffle tube top paired with a ruffle skirt.  I think the top would look cute with skintight denim as well, but I love this tiered and bulbous minidress as-is…hello, legs!  I want:

I never thought I’d say this but the dropped crotch pants are beginning to grow on me.  Miss Sixty came out with an incarnation that I think is actually really cute, and surprisingly flattering:

Barbie Runway Show Tweetalong Wrap-Up

Shallom and I had a prime view of the Barbie Runway Show streaming live to the big screen televisions in the Tenjune Lounge within the New York Fashion Week tents.  A convenient position because it allowed us to tweet throughout the whole show!  Here’s our play by play:

@tpotratz: lineup of standees for barbie show at #nyfw is not moving, crowd is getting pretty antsy…completely bottlenecked, what madness!

@shallomj: Barbie Runway show comin up….saw miss jay make his fabulous entrance a few minutes ago with tarina tarantino #NYFW

Inside the W Backstage Lounge, which was a really cool space.  Met the designer behind House of Cassette, Peter Lee, and he showed us some of his favourite pieces from the line.  We also ran into Dee and Ricky, who make these really cool lego brooches that were picked up by Marc Jacobs last season.

NYFW Day 3: What we Wore

Terri: kdon dress, Obakki leather jacket, larry scarf, Fiveleft tote.

Flo: Not sure

Shallom: deadboys clubhouse jacket and shirt worn as hood, Motherland t-shirt, Tiger of Sweden leggings, unidentified pants, Adhesif chains, Erin Templeton bag, Dominic Designs earring necklace.

On our way to a much-needed breakfast in SoHo after a ridiculously fun night out with about 12 folks from Vancouver.

Barbie 50th Anniversary Fashion Show - New York Fashion Week 2009

The Barbie 50th Anniversary show was epic.  So much buzz, held on the very amorous February 14th in the main tents at Bryant Park, featuring outfits from 52 of the biggest designers in fashion, including Michael Kors, Diane Von Furstenberg, Derek Lam, Calvin Klein, Anna Sui and more. So many people turned up that numerous media guests were turned away at the door – including, we heard, producers from Fox who were scheduled to interview the President of Mattel the following afternoon.  Yikes.

Kris got an amazing spot in the pit, as you can see from the photos, while Shallom and I hung out out at our table in the Tenjune Lounge inside the tents, where the show was being streamed live.  We were able to see the designs in much better detail and we were twittering like mad throughout the lengthy show.

Immediately I looked to the shoes.  I knew that Christian Louboutin had designed the hot pink Barbie pumps, but had had no sneak peek – they were amazing.  We just about died.

The show was presented in three parts: Classic, Current, and Future.  Each had different hair and makeup, and obviously the tone of the designs differed greatly.

NYFW Day 2: Academy of Art

Crossposted from Stylefinds, written by Shallom Johnson

Just a few favorites from the Academy of Art show on Day 2 of New York Fashion Week. There were a few designers involved in the show and I’m not sure of their names, but I’ll do some recon and try to find out asap. Academy of Art, based in San Francisco, is one of the largest accredited private art and design schools in the U.S. with over 12,000 students – and 2,000 of those are fashion students, some of whom are chosen to show their collections at NYFW. This year the show included one menswear and five womenswear collections in fashion design, textile design and knitwear design.

I really enjoyed this show – every garment was meticulously cut, simple but stunning. These were my favorites – subtle voluminous shapes in pale wintry tones and creamy whites.

I love the cut of this coat, the collar esepcially. The subtle print adds a really unique touch to a simple and quite classic design.

Gorgeous dress – love the combination of white, cream and silver, and that detailing at the bottom. Wow.

Another wonderful wool coat in a similar silhouette. I think I’d like to get one of these for next fall. But maybe not in white – I have too much of a propensity to spill things. Like coffee and red wine.
