From now until December 31, enjoy 15-30% off all Next Door Style stock, and receive free shipping too! Great chance to support local designers, and with no shipping fees it’s an extra sweet deal. Vanessa Fors, the mastermind behind the Next Door Style site, also runs a great new blog called Next Door Diary, so be sure to check that out and add it to your blogroll!
I am teaming up with fellow Vancouver fashion bloggers Victoria of DemiCouture and Shallom of Stylefinds to submit a fashion panel for the annual Northern Voice 2009 personal blogging and social media conference, but we need your help!
Do you have any requests for us to discuss? Is there anything that has been picking at your style-crossed mind lately?
Please comment below and fire away with any and all suggestions you may have. We’ll be designing our panel based on your input, so no holds barred! You’ve got until December 10 to make your requests, and the actual conference takes place February 20-21 2009.
Cheers!

The (212) spring/summer 2009 preview show was held at Heritage Hall on Tuesday, November 4th to a select industry crowd who whet their whistles with Russell Beers, Yellow Tail Wines and Voss Waters until the much-anticipated show began. Designer Anthony Castro and store partner Scott Walhovd presented a well-received collection:
tonal star butterfly sleeve top; pleated trouser pant; ultra suede scrunch belt
The designs remained casual but as a whole seemed to have graduated since previous seasons – I think it could be the colour palette they opted for, which was very warm and subdued compared to some prior collections. This muted colour was a major factor towards my feeling that the line had matured (however I did love one pretty flowery print they used), and the fabrics resonated this carefree quality that conjured up the kind of beautiful summer day where you can jump effortlessly from doing nothing to everything in an instant.
Victoria is chock full of great independent boutiques and Yates Street is home to a brand-new shopping destination: The Butchers Hook. The small, minimalist shop opened on October 21 and stocks great menswear and womenswear labels including Vancouver’s own (212), pieces by ex-Obakki designer Genevieve Graham, hand-knit scarves by the Canadian Sweater Co., my larry. neckwarmers, LnA, Wrath Arcane, and EVENAGAMBA. Dave Wallace, also an Obakki design alumni, owns the shop with model/girlfriend Lauren and plans to offer his own upcoming collection in the store in the near future.
Their goal is to carry only local labels by this upcoming Spring – preferably local to Victoria, but at the very least Dave wants all lines to be BC-designed. So a note to all you fashion designers looking for retailers for your SS09 pieces, get in touch with Dave or Lauren and show them your stuff!
The Butchers Hook is at 535 Yates St. in Victoria, BC. Call at 250.384.0327.
Jeff Hamada has teamed up with DesignforMankind with a new project on BOOOOOOOM.com and it’s all about “Free Encouragement.” With so much negativity in the world, it’s about time we started offering one other positive tokens and words of encouragement, spreading lovely thoughts instead of toxic ones.
Head to the site once you’ve thought up that perfect nugget of wisdom – or maybe it’s not perfect, and that’s ok too! – and submit one. In just a day Jeff has had well over 10,000 hits and TONS of submissions.
Here are some of my other favourites so far:
“I wish I could keep you in my pocket.”
“You made me look twice.”
“You are not just a muffin. You are a muffin with raisins.”
Read the first 40 posted submissions here and get thinkin’ on how you can change the world with some positive encouragement. Thanks for spreading some love and joy in the world, Jeff!
This is an open call out to fashion bloggers everywhere – if you are interested in taking link-swapping a gigantic step forward, I am interested in creating a solid network of blogs in an effort to feature fashion week and event coverage in other cities.
I know Montreal Fashion Week has begun, and Toronto starts next week – it kills me that I can’t be there to cover the shows myself. It’s a slow and painful experience, but this blogger collaboration/solidarity/world domination idea could be my salvation.
If you are interested in teaming up to share coverage of the best events in your city, and promoting your site to a wider audience in the process, please drop me a line and we’ll talk game plan. If you want to get off to a running start, put the call out on your blog as well and let’s get organized, people!
