It’s incredibly difficult not to shop for yourself throughout the season, but with a bit of resolve you can score some great holiday fashions on a budget. My weakness is clothing – the deals this time of year are so tantalizing that I have a hard time saying “no” and will somehow rationalize any purchases I make. Always seems like a good idea at the time…
If you’re smart with your holiday fashion plan, you can maintain an interesting wardrobe without shelling out all the money you could otherwise be spending on meaningful gifts for loved ones, or rent. Here are some tips:

I never used to have any skill when it came to thrift shopping. Eternally in a rush, I struggled to find the patience to sort through the racks, consider the potential of each item, and torture myself in the fitting room trying to force the pieces to look good when they simply didn’t. I ended up with a closet full of clothes that I never wore – hence my love for clothing swaps. Then suddenly I became a master second hand shopper, consistently scoring unique and well fitting pieces for dirt cheap. I finally developed a successful system, and here it is:

For anyone in the Vancouver area, this is a clothing swap you won’t want to miss. Monday night at the Grace Gallery, 7:30-11:30, bring your best old digs and a bottle of booze and swap the night away.
We were going to do this at my place as per usual, but the Grace Gallery offered up the space so we’re really getting serious now. A fine group of ladies will be participating and all have great style, so please don’t bring shitty clothes.
Garments, shoes, bags, accessories, etc – bring it all. We will have one massive free-for-all center pile for the things you really want to get rid of, and anything left over will go to charity.
Kim and I went through our wardrobes today and there are two enormous piles dominating my living room, it’s quite wonderful.

After a fantastic brunch at The Templeton today, I went for a browse through the Wildlife Rescue Thrift Store – and man oh man, do they have some wicked deals there. It had been quite a while since my last visit, and I forgot how cheap their prices are. Here’s what I got for just a bit of pocket change…
Felted jacket – incredible workmanship – and skinny brown waist belt:

Anne Klein blouse and white linen waist belt:

And for the pièce de résistance….a pink funnel-neck rain poncho, which also reminds me of an oversized mens shirt:

FYI there was a “For Lease” sign above the Wildlife store a while ago and I nearly panicked because I thought they’d be closing their doors, but the super cool gentleman at the till informed me that they’ve signed a 3 year lease with the new owners and will be sticking around for at least a while longer. Phew.
