Vancouver is Awesome Book Club: The Beggar’s Garden

I love my friends dearly, but we can’t keep our book club going to save our lives. Even when we do finally settle on one book, which of course we argue about relentlessly before finally drawing straws or resorting to RPS…once we get together for our meeting it’s all life and laughs and copious amounts of food and wine, and not a whole lot of nitty gritty on the actual book.

Enter Vancouver is Awesome and their awesome book club, which profiles publications from local writers with a meeting every few weeks or so, often with the author present to participate in the discussion. My inaugural VIA book club session will be tomorrow night, where we’ll delve into Michael Christie’s The Beggar’s Garden, a compilation of 9 short stories relating in some small or significant way to the Downtown Eastside. I live in the DTES, I run my business and my life out of this neck of the woods, so this book certainly had appeal on that level.  Plus I love the cover, and the author is cute, and his success makes me think if I just sat down and committed to write a book one day this kind of genius will just spill right out of me.

Even if you haven’t yet picked up this book, I’d advise that you attend tomorrow night and join the VIA book club for the next round of reading.

See you there!

Eco Fashion Week Vancouver: Wrap Up

Another installment of Eco Fashion Week presented by Aveda just wrapped up yesterday here in Vancouver, and coming from a position of enduring years of shoddily patched-together productions from other would-be organizations (I’m talking about you, Vancouver Fashion Week), it was such a relief to see this event come together in such a well-organized fashion.

Held at the beautifully restored Salt Building in the Olympic Athlete’s Village, shows took place over three days and were capped off by a trade show and free conference sessions.

My lovely friend Kim Cathers of kdon was a highlight with her Suture collection:

How much do I want those hand-dyed leggings? Amazing – looks like some mish-mash of fire, bone and smoke.  She also showed some deconstructed/studded/draped sweaters that I am most certainly going to get my hands on.

Loved this dress from The Battallion:

Some pieces from my larry. collection also snuck in on a couple of runway looks – here’s one from Sitka‘s show:

…and another from We3 Designs:

Thanks to Eco Fashion Week and all of the sponsors for providing a platform for designers to showcase their work in Vancouver – here’s to looking forward to the next season.

Haiku Studios Winter Sale

Amazing designers, fantastic ‘end of season’ deals even though it doesn’t much feel like the end of winter here in Vancouver yet.  Nice array of clothing designers, jewelry, and accessories (including big warm scarves!).  I am a bit obsessed with this kdonSheer Knight‘ blouse, of which there are only a few left so I’m snagging one early.

Not to be missed, my friends!

DACE and Friends Sample Sale

larry. will be taking part in this great sale happening next week – some of my favourite Vancouver designers all in one room, with discount prices.  Definitely a must-attend event…last year it was a “one for you, one for me” gift shopping scenario, but I’m ok with that.

AN EVENING of Photography, Fashion, and Charity

AN EVENING with Kim Cathers and Leigh Righton

My dear friend Kim Cathers has been busting her chops putting this amazing event together, and it’s shaping up to be one helluva night.  Fashion show, drinks, music, and photography, with proceeds going towards victims of the flood in Pakistan via the Canadian Red Cross.

Kim has transformed a nice big studio in the Dominion building to accommodate herself and another fashion designer with work rooms, adjoined by an open retail space that will showcase their work plus that of a featured designer.  Tonight is the (surprise!) announcement that larry. will be the inaugural featured designer in this innovative retail/work space, so come by and check out a selection of pieces from my collection in addition to photos by Leigh Righton, and pieces from Kim’s new kdon line.

The fashion show is styled by Kim, so will of course be amazing – this girl’s got style, people.

See you there!

Movember is the Best Month of All

me and a ‘stached lady in brighton, UK

OK I admit it: I’m a bit of a sucker for facial hair (which is really bad news for a girl who lives in East Van.)  I even wrote a song with my old roomie Liz entitled, ‘The Bearded Hunk,’ and when I reach the $500 mark in donations for the Nuba Movember fundraising group for prostate cancer, then perhaps I will post the amazingly crafted lyrics to this little ditty as a thank-you.  You will probably laugh right out loud when you read the lyrics, though it’s possible I might be giving myself too much credit.

So please, help a girl help a boy out and donate some pocket change or bills towards the cause.  The first week of Movember is always the worst because everyone is clean shaven and fresh-faced and that’s so not my bag.  The only things that will get me through it are 1) dreams of bearded and ‘stached hunks, ie. weeks 2, 3 and 4 of November, and 2) your money towards the Movember Canada charity.

DONATE HERE! And tell all your friends.  Especially the handsome hunky bearded ones.

PS: All the male staff at Nuba are extremely cute so I would watch their Movember moustache growth progress very closely.
